The Minneapolis Lacrosse Club was started in the fall of 1988 by Keith Burke, an Ohio transplant and 1987 gradate of Carelton College. I had
graduated from Carleton College in the spring of 1987. At that time there
were only two real lacrosse teams in the state of Minnesota, Carleton
College and the Twin Cities Lacrosse Club. Wanting to continue playing
lacrosse after college, my only option was the Twin Cities Lacrosse Club,
which was our hated rival while at Carleton. I played for them for one year
and couldn't stand it so I started a new team, the Minneapolis Lacrosse
Club.
Initially we consisted primarily of Carleton alumni. We were pretty
aggressive recruiting, placing adds at health clubs and the back of the City
Pages. We were able to get experienced players who had had moved here for
work, graduate school or treatment. We also allowed college students to play
for us and also some high school students who moved here from the east
coast. Also, practicing at the Lake Calhoun field gave us a lot of exposure.
We were a very successful program, winning tournaments in MN, WI and IL. As
lacrosse developed more in Minnesota we did not have to travel as much.
Before the college clubs became real organized, we were able to play them
regularly and usually eat them up pretty bad.
